Volunteer

Our volunteers are an important part of our team. They are as diverse as the communities we serve and we welcome applications from anyone over the age of 16.

Volunteers make a significant difference to our patients, visitors and staff and there are many different roles to choose from.

Volunteer roles
Hospital wards and midwifery

Listening to and talking to patients

Delivering trays of food and making sure they are in easy reach of the patient

Delivering and collecting forms and prescriptions

Answering the telephone and taking messages

Helping to tidy around beds while chatting

Outpatient clinics

Welcoming visitors and patients

Showing patients to the correct waiting area

Handing out leaflets and answering questions

Reassuring and assisting anxious patients and visitors

Receptions

Greeting patients and visitors

Directing and escorting patients around hospital

Helping with answering patient and visitor enquiries

Reassuring and assisting anxious patients and visitors

Providing wheelchairs or requesting a porter

Medical administration

A range of ‘office’ roles in a busy team environment such as:

Making up folders

Booking out notes

Tracking patients’ records

Photocopying

Mailshots

Children’s hospital

Playing/reading/talking with the children on the ward

Tidying the play areas

Assisting children with washing hands and faces, and cleaning teeth at bedtime

Assisting care staff with giving out drinks and meals

Sitting with a child to give the carer a short break

Small acts of friendship

Helping elderly patients retain dignity, social activity, mobility and wellbeing while in hospital

Taking part in activities such as reminiscence, art, hairdressing and poetry

Providing company and listening with empathy as they share their experiences

Supporting charity events
