What is the Early Pregnancy Unit?
We are a nurse led specialist unit for women who experience problems in early pregnancy. The specialist nurse will assess you. She might perform a urine pregnancy test, and or ultrasound scan and or blood tests depending on her assessment.
This clinic is for women with pain and / or bleeding in early pregnancy.
All patients should be seen and assessed by a health professional and have a positive urine pregnancy test. We do not accept self referrals unless you have had a previous history of:
- Ectopic pregnancy.
- Molar pregnancy.
- x3 consecutive miscarriages.

8:00 am to 6:00 pm

This is not a walk in clinic; it is open from 8am to 6pm daily Monday to Friday.
We ask that you please arrive on time or you will run the risk of been rescheduled.
Due to the emotional nature of the clinic appointment times and waiting times may vary.
Certain cases may take priority due to an emergency.

What is the referral process?
Women with problems in early pregnancy may be referred via:
- Accident and emergency department.
- Community midwife.
- Ultra sound department.
- GP referral.
- Gynaecology Assessment Unit.
- Urgent Care Centre.
- Self referrals are accepted based on history of ectopic / molar / recurrent miscarriage.
What will happen when you arrive to the unit and during your consultation?
The specialist nurse will assess plan implement and evaluate your care. She will provide you with the necessary paperwork to take home with you.
In certain cases you may have to wait for the specialist doctor and waiting times may vary.
The specialist nurse will keep you updated with all aspects of your care.
What do I do if I experience further pain or bleeding?
If you are under 14 weeks pregnant, you can call us during opening hours to speak to a nurse about your concerns. Your call will be answered any time between midday to 6pm.
If you are over 14 weeks pregnant, call the maternity assessment unit on telephone 01273 664793 (Royal Sussex County Hospital) or telephone 01444 448669 (Princess Royal Hospital). These services are open 24/7.
