University Hospitals Sussex is committed to delivering outstanding care and, as part of the Trust strategy, shaping a future where every patient experience is seamless, safe, and informed. One of the most significant steps toward that vision is the introduction of an Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system. This is a transformation that will change information is managed and care is delivered across the trust.
it’s a big change, but one that will make a big difference
Currently, patient information is often spread across multiple systems and paper records, making it harder for clinicians to access the full picture quickly. The EPR system will bring everything together into one secure, digital source of truth for every patient. From test results and treatment plans to medication history and clinical notes, all the information will be available in one place, accurate, up-to-date, and accessible when it matters most.
For patients, this means:
- Safer care: Clinicians will have instant access to the right information, reducing duplication and the risk of errors.
- Faster decisions: Reduced delays caused by locating paper records.
- Joined-up services: Whether you’re in Brighton, Worthing, Haywards Heath, Shoreham or Chichester, your care team will see the same information, supporting continuity and collaboration.
- More time for you: By reducing administrative tasks, staff can spend more time on what matters most… your care.
Rolling out EPR is a major undertaking, and teams are working hard behind the scenes to make sure it lands smoothly. They are mapping current processes, identifying pain points, and finding opportunities to improve before the system goes live. This preparation ensures that EPR will not only replace old systems but make things better for patients and staff alike.
The team are also listening to patients. In recent improvement events, patients have shared ideas that will shape the future of care, such as providing simple daily summaries for those recovering from a stroke, helping them stay informed and involved in their treatment.
EPR is more than a technology upgrade; it’s a cultural shift toward continuous improvement and patient-centred care. By reducing duplication, streamlining workflows, and empowering staff, UHSussex are creating a system that supports better outcomes and a better experience for everyone.
Digital Improvement Intervention Lead Bridget Pettitt says: “Our ambition is clear: one source of truth, easy to use, trusted by clinicians, and delivering real benefits for patients. It’s a big change, but one that will make a big difference.”
EPR readiness work will continue throughout the year to make sure the foundations are in place ahead of implementation. Phased rollout will begin in 2027, starting with the introduction of the patient portal, electronic noting and electronic observations.
As the Trust moves toward an Electronic Patient Record system, the way UHSussex work together as an organisation and with partners, will become more connected and seamless. Instead of chasing paper or piecing together separate systems, teams across the hospitals and in the community will be able to pick up the same clear thread of a patient’s journey. With one trusted, secure record supporting every decision, the organisation can build stronger partnerships and a more efficient, coordinated health system for everyone.
