University Hospitals Sussex is pleased to announce that Alex Shaw has now joined the Trust as Chief Delivery Officer, strengthening executive leadership across one of the largest acute trusts in the country.
Chief Executive, Dr Andy Heeps said: “We are delighted to welcome Alex to UHSussex. He brings a strong track record of operational leadership and large-scale transformation, alongside a clear commitment to compassionate leadership.
“Many colleagues will remember working with Alex during his previous time in Sussex, where he held a range of senior leadership roles. I’m confident his strong local system knowledge and collaborative approach will support our continued focus on delivering our ‘Excellent Care, Everywhere’ Trust Strategy.
In his new role, Alex is responsible for leading operational performance, improvement and transformation across UHSussex, supporting the delivery of safe, effective and high‑quality care for patients across all services and sites.
These responsibilities were previously overseen by Interim Chief Operating Officer, Nigel Kee. With Nigel’s interim position coming to an end, Alex will now assume these functions, providing continuity in our work to improve patient outcomes and experiences while supporting colleagues to deliver high‑quality care.

His contribution has been greatly appreciated across the organisation. As Nigel moves on, Alex’s arrival ensures we maintain momentum in delivering excellent care for our patients and supporting colleagues across all our services.”
Alex joins the Trust from Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, where he served as Interim Managing Director and previously held the substantive role of Chief Operating Officer. During his career, Alex has led significant improvements in urgent and emergency care, elective recovery, diagnostics, cancer services and patient flow, as well as overseeing major transformation programmes including electronic patient record implementation, acute hospital reconfiguration and outpatient redesign.
