Artist Hannah Maybank created a suite of printed and stencilled artworks that was applied to 26 Quiet Rooms and 15 Treatment Rooms within the new hospital. The artwork will be based around three core themes from the CONNECT arts programme: Town, Sussex and Coast. However, an overarching theme of flora and pattern will be used as the basis of all the compositions.
Quiet rooms
Quiet rooms are places where patients, visitors and staff may be told bad news or experience discussions of particular emotional intensity. These spaces will require a sensitive solution within the compositions to create a supportive and soothing therapeutic environment. Hannah has created bespoke printed wallworks (which will be low maintenance with a wipeable surface) to be used on one wall of each quiet room.
‘Town’
‘Coast’
Treatment rooms
Patients in these areas can be unconscious or conscious or making the journey between the two states. That, combined with medication, can mean that confusion and delirium are real issues. Much of the wall space is used up by equipment, therefore ceiling artwork is proposed in these areas. The artwork is applied direct to ceilings through stencils or printed ceiling tiles to help soften these spaces.
