Dr Matt Pavitt is a consultant respiratory physician at the Royal Sussex County Hospital (University of Sussex NHS Foundation Trust). He completed his medical degree at St George’s Hospital Medical School in 2008 and went on to train in respiratory medicine in HE KSS including 4-years at the Royal Brompton Hospital. In 2021 he completed his PhD in respiratory physiology in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at the National Heart and Lung Institute (Imperial College).

Areas of expertise

Dr Pavitt is a consultant respiratory physician with areas of expertise in:

• COPD, including assessment for lung volume reduction procedures
• Alpha one antitrypsin deficiency
• Pulmonary rehabilitation
• Asthma, including difficult-to-treat and severe asthma, and assessment for biologic asthma therapies
• Shortness of breath and unexplained breathlessness
• Respiratory virtual ward

Research interests

His major research interests are in COPD, airways disease, pulmonary rehabilitation and breathlessness. He has publications in these areas.

Memberships

Dr Pavitt is a member of the British Thoracic Society; is member of its Specialist Advisory Group on COPD and the pulmonary rehabilitation clinical statement.

He is also a member of the European Respiratory Society and the Royal College of Physicians.
