Biography
Dr Sophia Stone is a consultant obstetrician in maternal medicine and an honorary clinical senior lecturer for Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS).
Sophia is based in St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester. In addition to labour ward sessions, she has twice weekly maternal medicine clinics and a monthly joint obstetric haematology clinic. Sophia attends a joint monthly clinic in the Sussex Maternal Medicine Centre in Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton. She is the lead specialist for the Sussex Maternal Medicine Network, leading on the development of maternal medicine services and education in Sussex. She is module leader for the postgraduate Maternal Medicine module of the MSc in Internal Medicine for BSMS.
Sophia has an interest in clinical research. She Is NIHR regional specialty research lead in Kent, Surrey and Sussex for Reproductive Health and Childbirth. Sophia represents the region at national specialty meetings and supports all obstetric units in the region to participate in research studies.
She is actively involved in a number of maternal medicine research studies as principle investigator in UHSussex as well as supervisor to an MD research fellow. She has published extensively on various maternal medicine conditions complicating pregnancies including antiphospholipid syndrome/ SLE as the topic of her MD thesis and in which she has maintained an interest. Sophia regularly reviews articles for publication In Lupus and Obstetric Medicine. She has contributed to the development of Trust obstetric guidelines including pregnancies after bariatric surgery, venous thromboembolism, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy and hypertension In pregnancy, maternal medicine conditions on the labour ward and others.
Sophia has an interest in undergraduate medical education and is a BSMS year 5 Sub-dean for Chichester. She also oversees 4th year medical students on their O&G attachment from Southampton medical school as well as BSMS students. She Is clinical chair OBGYN for the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine and a member of their clinical curriculum committee.
Sophia is a mother of three, enjoys walking, various sports and is learning French in her spare time.
