Mr David Crone is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at University Hospitals Sussex, where he has worked within the Major Trauma Centre since 2012. He graduated from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1999 and completed the majority of his specialist training at The Royal London Hospital as part of the North East Thames rotation. This provided him with extensive experience in the management of major trauma from an early stage in his career.
Mr Crone undertook specialist fellowship training in trauma and elective knee surgery in Christchurch, New Zealand. During this time, he gained invaluable experience in the management of severe and complex injuries, including mass casualty trauma following the devastating Christchurch earthquake in 2011.
His practice focuses on the management of major trauma, with a particular interest in modern damage-control techniques and complex fracture reconstruction. His areas of expertise include the management of non-union, malunion, bone infection and bone loss. His extensive, high-volume trauma practice has led to his development as a regional expert in the reconstruction of complex tibial plateau (knee) fractures and other severe lower limb injuries.
Mr Crone was instrumental in establishing the Sussex Orthoplastic and Bone Infection Service in collaboration with his consultant colleagues. He works closely with Plastic Surgery and Microbiology teams to provide multidisciplinary care for patients with complex orthopaedic injuries and bone infection. He served for many years as Clinical Lead for Orthopaedic Trauma and continues to make a significant contribution to the coordination and development of the Sussex Trauma Network.
Alongside his trauma practice, Mr Crone has a specialist interest in elective knee surgery. He regularly operates at the Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre, where he treats a broad range of knee conditions, including knee arthroplasty (joint replacement), arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery and soft-tissue procedures, including ligament repair and reconstruction. Mr Crone is actively involved in education and training and has extensive experience teaching and directing courses at local, national and international level. He has served as Regional Course Director for Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) for many years, delivering highly regarded trauma education and training. He is also involved in clinical audit and research and serves as a reviewer for the British Bone & Joint Journal.
Outside his NHS practice, Mr Crone enjoys spending time with his family. He is active in a number of sports, including swimming, cycling and running, and occasionally takes part in triathlons. He is also a keen scuba diver and skier.
