Mr Paul MacKenzie is a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and General Surgeon at Worthing Hospital, Southlands Hospital (University Hospitals Sussex) and at Goring Hall Hospital.
Mr MacKenzie grew-up in Salisbury, Wiltshire and was educated at St Georges Hospital Medical School, London and at the Peninsula Medical School (Universities of Exeter and Plymouth) graduating in 2010.
After undertaking rotations at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Mr Mackenzie was appointed to the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Higher Surgical Training Programme in 2014.
Mr MacKenzie trained in Upper GI Surgery at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford and St Richards Hospital, Chichester and he spent three years undertaking a research fellowship at the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit (MATTU) Guildford, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2022.
Mr MacKenzie’s research interests are in perioperative care and improving outcomes from surgery and he has published in several journals and written a book chapter in the field. He has taught for the Royal College of Surgeons, is a current educational and clinical supervisor, sits on national selection panels for surgical trainees and is an examiner at Brighton and Sussex Medical School.
Mr MacKenzie is experienced in a wide range of open and keyhole techniques for common intra-abdominal conditions and has specialist interests in the management of gallstone disease including emergency and complex gallbladder pathology, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, swallowing disorders, as well as all aspects of simple and complex abdominal wall hernias.
Mr MacKenzie is currently Trust “Safe Cholecystectomy” lead and Trust General Surgery lead for the Getting it Right First Time” (GIRFT) programme.
In addition, Mr MacKenzie is a JAG certified Upper Gastrointestinal endoscopist and undertakes minor skin and soft tissue procedures.
Professional affiliations include Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Member of the Association of Upper GI Surgeons (AUGIS), Member of the British Benign Upper GI Surgical Society.
