I qualified from Charing Cross Hospital Medical School in 1982 and trained in London at Charing Cross and St George’s Hospitals including rotating to other units across S W Thames. I did a Fellowship in Baltimore USA at the University of Baltimore and Johns Hopkins Hospital before becoming a consultant in Mid Sussex at the Princess Royal Hospital in 1997. The Princess Royal Hospital merged with the Royal Sussex County Hospital in 2010 which again recently became part of University Hospitals Sussex. My area of clinical interest is in foot and ankle surgery including trauma although latterly my focus is mostly on elective surgery to include ankle fusion, ankle replacement, correction of deformities including flat foot and cavus or high arched feet, arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgery, soft tissue injuries of the ankle and bunion and toe corrections.
I have published on a wide range of topics including ankle soft tissue impingement pain, the surgical approaches to the big toe and several papers on ankle arthritis. I was a Principal Investigator locally for the TARVA study which won the Roger Mann Award from the American Foot & Ankle Society in 2023. I have been involved with training being an FRCSORTH examiner for over 10 years and a Training Programme Director for the region. I founded the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS) Basics Course and Outcome Registry. I was BOFAS President in 2014 and a British Orthopaedic Association Trustee until recently. I was also a visitor working for the Health Care Professions Council advising on podiatric surgery training courses.
I continue to be the local Integrated Care Board T&O GIRFT lead and an NCIP Foot and ankle lead. My current focus is upon setting up networks to address the management of end stage ankle arthritis across the region and nationally.
