Our varied programme of skills sessions is designed to support your clinical practice, study, research and professional development.

Whether you want to refresh your literature searching skills, develop your critical appraisal abilities, prepare for study, or run a journal club, there’s a session for you.

• Regular sessions run online via MS Teams and onsite (on request) at our libraries in Brighton, Haywards Heath, Worthing and Chichester.
• Sessions at Mill View Hospital (Hove) can be arranged on request.
• Bespoke teaching is available for teams across all areas of the Trust.

Finding Quality Health Information

Ideal for anyone needing to locate reliable evidence for patient care, service improvement, research or assignments. Learn how to structure an effective search query and search key information sources, such as UpToDate, the Knowledge and Library Hub and healthcare databases, in order to find relevant publications.

Sessions include hands‑on practice and online and onsite sessions are available.

Understanding the Evidence

Bite-sized sessions showing you how to critically appraise quantitative research and interpret medical statistics to inform patient care or service development.

Each of these is a stand‑alone, 45 minute session  delivered in small groups for maximum interaction.

Identifying Study Designs

Understand common study designs and how to recognise them

Recognising Bias

Learn to spot common biases in research and assess study reliability.

Interpreting Statistics

Build confidence with p-values, confidence intervals and risks/odds.

How to Read Qualitative Research

A 90‑minute session designed to help you critically appraise qualitative studies, understand key concepts like generalisability and validity, and recognise sources of bias. Delivered onsite or online. (Please book by 5pm the day before.)

Facilitating a Journal Club

Learn practical tips for running or revitalising a journal club, from session structure to tackling common challenges. Great for teams wanting to strengthen evidence‑based discussion.

Preparing for Study

If you’re embarking on a course, returning to study or writing assignments, this session covers everything from time management and note‑taking to evaluating sources, essay writing and referencing. 90 minutes; delivered onsite or online.
