The TEL Team have recently overhauled the categories and tags on the iris platform. The goal of this change is to make finding courses easier when using the Find Learning function. It will also make reporting on courses by certain subjects more robust.
This post outlines what has changed.
New Course Categories
Courses should now be categorised using one of the following:
- Statutory & Mandatory Training (reserved only for STAM courses)
- Medical & Dental
- Nursing & Midwifery
- Admin & Clerical
- Allied Health & Health Sciences
- Facilities & Estates
- Admin & Clerical
- Trust-wide Education
- Digital Skills & Systems Training
- Volunteering
All categories have been already updated and are being reviewed by the TEL Team for accuracy. Educators that have courses on iris are strongly advised to audit their new categories and make changes if there is an identified miscategorisation.
New Course Tags
The TEL Team have overhauled the list of tags and the way tags work.
Courses can now only be tagged using one or more tags from the predefined list below:
- Capacity and consent
- Career development
- Caring
- Communicating with patients
- Continence
- Dementia
- Deteriorating patient
- Digital skills and systems
- Diversity and inclusion
- Educating staff and students
- Effective
- Equality
- Falls prevention
- Human factors and freedom to speak up
- Leadership & management
- Learning disabilities
- Medicines safety and optimisation
- Mental health
- Nutrition and hydration
- Pressure damage
- Privacy and dignity
- Research and evidence
- Responsive
- Safe
- Values and behaviours
- Venous thromboembolism
- Well-Led
- Wellbeing
The team are currently updating courses manually with tags. They expect to have them all completed by Spring 2026.
As with Categories, educators are encouraged to audit their courses and apply tags from the above list.
What if I have specific keywords for my course?
You can no longer use your own keywords as course tags on iris.
To enhance searches and improve the way your learners find your course through the First Learning function, you can add keywords to your course’s metada settings under the Course Settings.
These keywords can include relevant terms as well as mistypings of keywords (ie. Patientrack, Patienttrack, Patient Track, Patientrak)
