Babies and children with hearing or balance difficulties in Sussex are benefiting from one of the region’s highest‑performing paediatric audiology services, following a national review commissioned by NHS England.
Paediatric audiologist, Rob Low, explains: “A national review required every paediatric audiology service in the country to submit extensive evidence showing how we deliver safe, effective care for young patients.”
“The process took more than a year and was incredibly thorough, examining our clinical practice, governance, facilities, data quality and observing appointments with our young patients.
The Sussex service received a ‘Good’ rating overall – the highest rating award through the review.

Based in the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, the service supports newborns referred after hearing screening, as well as children with neurodiverse and complex needs.
The department carries out around 250 children’s appointments every month, supported by specialist diagnostic equipment, some of which is not available elsewhere in the county — including an in‑house 3D printer for ear moulds.
Head of Audiology, Manuel Loureiro said: “This outcome means so much to the team. I’m incredibly proud of the resilience they showed throughout such a rigorous audit process.
“The review confirmed what families tell us nearly every day – that they feel supported, listened to and cared for.”
The report praised the team’s warm, family‑centred approach, highlighting their excellent facilities, modern equipment, strong teamwork and commitment to involving families at every stage, and the strength of teamwork.

“This is an incredible accomplishment that reflects the commitment and professionalism of our paediatric audiology team.” Manuel adds.
Recent investment has strengthened the service, including expanding its workforce and relocating from the old Barry Building into the children’s hospital. The move has created more clinical space, improved child‑friendly areas and closer collaboration with paediatric teams.
Together, these improvements have reduced waiting times, improved access and enabled more joined‑up care, supporting the Trust’s commitment to provide Excellent Care Everywhere.
As the Trust marked World Hearing Day yesterday, the paediatric audiology service continues to grow and innovate, ensuring children across Sussex receive safe, timely and high-quality care.
