This year, Clean Air Day – the UK’s largest campaign tackling air pollution – took place on 19 June, focusing on amplifying healthcare workers’ voices to drive action on cleaner air at both a national and local level.
At University Hospitals Sussex, a powerful walk and wheel event from the Royal Sussex County Hospital to Brighton Town Hall was led by neurology registrar Dr Sara Leddy and local clean air advocate Adrian Hill.
The group delivered two messages: a national healthcare letter signed by over 500 healthcare professionals which was submitted to Parliament by clinicians from Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, as well as a local petition calling for urgent action on air pollution in Brighton.
A public stand in the foyer of the Louisa Martindale Building also helped raise awareness of the campaign among staff, patients, and visitors on the day.
Speaking about the important cause, Dr Sara Leddy said:
Staff at University Hospital Sussex treat respiratory illness, strokes, and heart disease every day – all of which are worsened by air pollution. There is emerging evidence showing a link between air pollution and dementia. We know that exposure to air pollution is also associated with preterm birth. Our duty to protect patient health does not stop at the hospital doors.
The walk brought together NHS colleagues, Brighton residents, clean air campaigners, Green Councillor Kerry Pickett, and local resident Gary Fuller, an Associate Professor in Air Quality at Imperial College London. The group were met by Jess Gibbons, Chief Executive of Brighton & Hove City Council, and have been invited to formally present the petition in October.
Make your voice heard
The petition urges the council to take swift action to reduce dangerous air pollution on Lewes Road – the most polluted area in Brighton. The road borders several primary schools, nurseries, and residential areas inhabiting UHSussex patients and staff.
By treating Lewes Road as a pilot zone for new clean air measures, the group hopes this initiative can pave the way for a wider rollout across the city.
