When transport arrangements for delivering vital clinical trial medication were disrupted, Worthing pharmacy technician Abi took responsibility for personally delivering the prescription to the patient’s home.
Abi Downham, who has worked at Worthing Hospital’s pharmacy for three years and qualified as a pharmacy technician in October, was awarded Star of the Month for her actions.
She was nominated by Lead Clinical Trials Pharmacist, Jamie Richardson, for her ‘diligence, initiative and responsibility.’
Jamie added: “Some of our older, more frail cancer-trial patients have their medicines delivered to their home. Strict trial protocol rules mean there is often a small time-frame from when the prescription is issued to when the next dose is due.
“Abi took ownership of the situation, ensured the medicines were dispensed and then delivered them personally.”
Research and innovation are now one of the key strategic themes towards University Hospitals Sussex (UHSussex) achieving the vision of excellent care every time.
As part of this, the Trust is currently setting the target of widening access to clinical trials and getting more patients and staff involved in more research studies.
Abi said at the surprise presentation: “I always say treat others how you wish to be treated. The whole reason I entered pharmacy was to help others and treat them with the respect they deserve.”
Michael Cross, Chief Pharmacist who presented Abi with her UHSussex Star of the Month prize and certificate, added: “It is great we are celebrating someone who has stepped up and taken the initiative. Abi is a credit to the team; no one is surprised to hear that she has gone above and beyond to deliver exceptional patient care.”
If you know a member of staff, team or volunteer that has gone above and beyond why not nominate them for Star of the Month award.
