Worthing Hospital is excited to be trialling a new campaign from 22-26 September to enhance the experience of in-patient dementia and frailty patients, through donated comfort and engagement items.
Led by dementia clinical nurse specialists Tina Martin and Cassie Hall, alongside technician Dylan Jones, this small but dedicated team is taking steps to make hospital stays feel more familiar, personal, and comforting for patients.
“The idea behind the campaign is rooted in person-centred care. Being surrounded by familiar items like comfortable clothes or activity-based resources can significantly reduce distress for patients, especially those with dementia or frailty,” explains Tina.
“While we encourage families to bring in personal belongings, this isn’t always possible. That’s where these donated items can make a real difference.”
The team has hosted information stands in the hospital foyer this week to raise awareness and will attend ward huddles next week to spread the word.
Items to donate:
Useful items include:
- Soft toys
- Puzzle books and games
- Sensory or fidget items
- Colouring books and crayons
- Digital/audio devices (radios/CD players/iPads) with chargers
- Other engagement materials
Please ensure items are complete, age-appropriate, and in good condition.
Each participating department (all adult medical wards and Emergency Floor) will have a clearly marked box for donation drop-offs from staff or ward visitors.
While the initial focus is on Worthing, the team hopes the pilot will pave the way for a broader rollout, highlighting the importance of rehumanising hospital care and recognising the individual needs of our most vulnerable patients.
