Consultant cardiologists, who normally treat adult patients, have been recognised for their outstanding quick-thinking and teamwork after saving the life of a six-year-old who arrived in a critical condition at A&E.
Late on a Friday afternoon, a young patient was brought to Worthing Hospital needing urgent treatment for a suspected cardiac tamponade – a rare but life-threatening condition where fluid builds up around the heart and prevents it from pumping effectively.
Dr Reza Zadeh, Clinical Lead for Cardiology and one of the colleagues who performed the urgent procedure, said:
“This patient required highly specialised care, and with several challenging factors – being in the emergency department, out of hours, and the age of the patient – we needed colleagues with the right expertise straight away.”
Although not on call that evening, Consultant Cardiologist Dr Marian Bencat and members of the adult cardiology team, including Dr Reza and Dr George Hogan, responded immediately and without hesitation.
Their rapid decision‑making and willingness to act ensured the child received the urgent intervention needed, avoiding delays and ultimately saving a life.
Together the colleagues performed an urgent echocardiogram guided pericardiocentesis in the Emergency Department – a procedure usually carried out in a cardiology cathlab to stabilise the patient and prevent what could have been a tragic outcome.
Kate Windsor, Paediatric Emergency Department Registrar, witnessed the lifesaving actions and nominated the team for the Star of the Month award. She said:
“This care was truly patient‑focused. Without their expertise and quick thinking, the patient may have had a very different outcome. Many factors aligned in this patient’s prompt care, but it was without a doubt the willingness of our adult cardiology colleagues to step in and manage a child that made all the difference.”
Dr Reza added: “This was a powerful example of colleagues coming together across specialties to provide excellent care. I’m really proud we were able to give this child the best chance of recovery.”
This incredible moment has been highlighted as an example of the Trust’s ethos – teamwork, integrity, and professionalism in tackling the most challenging situations.
Star of the Month award recognises the commitment and dedication of staff members who give a service that is over and above what is expected of them in order to make a difference to patients, visitors and/or their colleagues.
The monthly award scheme will soon be closing for the year, ready for UHSussex’s annual STAR Awards later in 2026.
