A respiratory consultant has transformed a childhood pastime into a published children’s comic book that turns the inner workings of the lungs into an exciting adventure.
Dr Numbere K. Numbere has written ‘Adventures of the Lungs’, a fun and educational story designed to help children understand the importance of the lungs and how they support everyday activities such as talking, eating and singing.
Numbere was invited to contribute to the ‘Adventures of the Human Body’ series, a collection of books that personifies different body parts as lively cartoon characters navigating relatable, everyday scenarios.
Numbere said: “I’m an avid comic book fan so this concept of using the comic strip medium to bring scientific concepts to life was right up my alley.
“I honestly could not think of any more important goals in life than encouraging and inspiring children to take an interest in the human body and in science as a wider whole. This is my small part in that endeavour and I consider myself blessed to have been afforded that opportunity.”
Aimed at children eight and above, the book blends simple scientific explanations with cartoon artwork to make learning accessible, engaging and fun.
Numbere explains: “I storyboarded some ideas and drew rough sketches of the lead character, Lungy, and the various scrapes and scenarios he would be in. I also drafted the script and went through multiple iterations with the help of the publishing team.”
The illustrations were brought to life by former Beano cartoonist, Gary Boller, who transformed Dr Numbere’s concepts into vibrant, expressive artwork.
Reflecting on the experience, Numbere said: “I had never done anything like this before, well not since was I was 12 drawing stick men comics for the excited amusement of my younger siblings.
“It was a lot of hard work and took nearly two years but it has been a wonderfully rewarding experience.”
He hopes to continue his literary adventures in the future and explore more creative ways to make science fun for young readers.
