In May, Tim Vincent, Senior Learning Technologist, led a national event called ‘Show & TEL: Sharing digital education insights in practice’, as part of the Association for the Scholarship of Medical Education (ASME). The one-day, in-person event was hosted at Leicester Medical School and brought together a diverse group of educators and practitioners to showcase digital education innovations across the health professions. Participants from various medical and healthcare fields, including Medicine, Radiography, Nursing, and Operating Department Practice, shared their work. Attendees came from both near and far, including international participants from China and Malaysia.
The morning sessions largely focused on the application of virtual reality (VR) in teaching anatomy, clinical, and non-technical skills, and even for simulating challenging pastoral care scenarios. After a lunch break that included a chance to experience various VR healthcare-education offerings, the afternoon shifted its focus to artificial intelligence (AI). Presentations explored AI’s role in areas such as dermatological counselling, OSCE preparation, accent familiarization, and big data analysis for patient safety. A recurring theme throughout the day was the importance of human elements like sustainability, inclusivity, empathy, and accessibility in TEL.
It was a highly successful event and encouraging to see the range of digital education innovations, and also grow connections across the health professions community.
