Your Physiotherapist will show you how to use Bubble PEP, this leaflet is only a reminder for you.
What is Bubble PEP?
- Bubble pep is a fun way to encourage children to expand their lungs and help clear a build up of phlegm
- bubble PEP is a treatment where you are encouraged to blow big bubbles through water.
How does Bubble PEP work?
- Air enters and leaves the lungs via airways
- there are lots of interconnecting routes and channels between these airways
- PEP helps air to move in and out of these airways
- the air helps to move the phlegm so it can be coughed up (cleared)
- it can be messy and should be fun!
What equipment do I need?
You will need one small milk bottle and one large straw.

How do I use Bubble PEP?
- Take a breath in and blow out through the tubing into the water to create bubbles
- try and make it a long breath out and make lots of bubbles
- repeat this for 15 breaths
- after 15 breaths stop and have a huff and/or cough to clear phlegm (your physiotherapist will show you how)
- repeat this cycle __ times.
Important:
Stay safe:
Keep the equipment clean to prevent infection.
Always make sure you blow out through the tubing and do not suck in the contents of the bottle.
Change the water after each use.
Stop if you feel dizzy or have any chest pain.
Contact your physiotherapist if you have any questions.
