Why have I been given this information?
Your child is going to have an eye test for glasses. Cyclopentolate hydrochloride drops help the optometrist to see the back of their eyes more easily. This information will show you how to give your child the drops safely.
How should I give my child the eye drops?
Do this 45 minutes before the appointment time with the optometrist.
- Wash your hands.
- Remove the single dose dropper from the packet by pulling back the paper and then pull off the cap.
- Gently pull down the lower lid of the eye.
- Squeeze the dropper and put ONE drop in EACH EYE.

What should I do if I cannot put the drops in?
If you cannot put the drops in please arrive about 45 minutes early for your appointment. They will put the drops in for you.
Are there any side effects?
While the drops start working your child may complain of blurred vision. They may find bright light or sunshine a little uncomfortable. This is normal. These side effects can last up to 24 hours.
If your child experiences any other side effects, please telephone the Orthoptic department.
