Eye drops
Your child will be given eye drops or ointment to use at home for the next few weeks. Use these as advised by your consultant or pharmacist.
Maxitrol eye drops
Maxitrol is an anti inflammatory eye drop that also contains antibiotics. It is used for the short term treatment of inflammation of the eye and to help prevent infection.
Chloramphenicol
Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic. It comes as eye drops or eye ointment and is used to treat bacterial eye infections.
Important note on use of eye drops
If both eyes have been operated on please use a separate bottle of eye drops / ointment for each eye. If more eye drops / ointment is needed please contact your GP for a prescription.
Sometimes treatment will continue for several weeks. Please use a fresh bottle of eye drops every month. When your course of treatment is finished, safely discard the bottle.
Don’t allow anyone else to use the eye drops / ointment prescribed for your child.
Applying your eye drops
Wash your hands prior to administering eye drops.
Ask your child to sit or lie down, raise their chin and ask them to look up at the ceiling. Gently pull the lower eye lid downwards.
With one hand, hold the eye drop bottle close to, but not touching, the eye and squeeze the prescribed amount into the eye(s).
Tell your child to keep their eye closed and make sure they don’t rub their eye(s). Blot away any excess eye drop from around the eye with a clean tissue.
