What do I have to do?
When you are admitted to hospital, please bring all your medicines that you are taking, not just those prescribed by your GP.
In an emergency situation, if you forget, please see if a relative or friend can bring them in for you.
If this is a planned admission, make sure you have enough medicines for your stay and for when you are discharged home.
In hospital, your medicines will be stored securely and returned to you on discharge if still appropriate.
Why do I need to bring my medicines into hospital with me?
- If you have your medicines with you, there is a reduced risk of missed or delayed doses
- You will be able to take your own brand of medicines, that you are familiar with
- If we know what you are already taking, it helps us to make sure we prescribe your existing medicines accurately, and to prescribe any new medicines to you safely
- If your prescription changes while you are in hospital, we can safely dispose of any unwanted medicines with your permission

The Medicines Information (MI) Service is a specialist team in the Pharmacy department that supports the safe, effective and efficient use of medicines across the Trust.
