What is an ultrasound scan?
An ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the inside of the body. It is safe, painless, and does not use radiation.
What happens before the scan?
Your child may need to avoid eating or drinking before the scan. We will let you know if this applies. They should wear loose clothing or a hospital gown. Please do not bring any valuables with you.
What happens during the scan?
A sonographer (a person who uses a machine to create pictures of the inside of the body) will apply gel to your child’s skin and use a small probe against the skin to take images. The scan is safe and painless. It usually takes about 10 to 20 minutes.
Who will be at the scan?
A friendly sonographer or radiologist will carry out the scan. They will explain everything as they go.
What happens after the scan?
There are no side effects. Your child can return to school, nursery or normal activities straight after the appointment.
How can I help my child if they are feeling nervous?
It is normal for children to feel nervous. You can stay with them during the scan.
Explain that the scan is safe and painless. Bring a favourite toy or book for comfort. Toys and books are also available in the imaging department to help them relax.
When will we get the results of the scan?
The results will be reviewed and sent to the doctor who referred your child. They will contact you to discuss the findings. This usually takes a few days.
What should I do if we can’t keep this appointment?
Call us as soon as possible if you can’t keep this appointment. We can make you another and give yours to someone else.
