Across our hospitals and services, staff and volunteers make an extraordinary difference every day, whether it’s providing excellent care to patients, working as a team or finding new ways to learn and improve.
The STAR Awards shine a light on these contributions and celebrate the people and teams who strive to deliver Excellent Care Everywhere, reflecting our values of being compassionate, inclusive and respectful.
This year, we have introduced an award for those who have experienced excellent care across our Trust, the Excellent Care for Our Patients award. The category is dedicated to patients, family, friends and visitors to nominate into. Find out more about this award below
Dr Andy Heeps, Chief Executive at the Trust, said:
At the heart of the STAR Awards are the moments that show what great care looks like, how we work together and make a difference for patients every day. These awards are also an opportunity for us to recognise and celebrate each other, and the values and behaviours we’re continuing to strengthen across UHSussex.
I’d encourage everyone to take a few moments to nominate an individual or team who has made a real difference to you or to a patient. Your recognition really does matter.”
The STAR awards ceremony is taking place in September at the Hilton Brighton Metropole. We would like to thank My UHSussex, our dedicated charity, for proudly funding this event.

Completing your nomination form
Every year, hundreds of nominations are submitted. To ensure your nomination gets through to the final stages use the tips and prompts below to help write a successful nomination. Remember, there is no right or wrong way to write a nomination, but you must tell the story of what your nominee has done.
- Use AI! You could use an AI tool like Microsoft Copilot (free) to help you write a nomination, for example, type in “write me a nomination for hospital hero for Sally a nurse who showed compassion and went over and above to save my brother’s life.”
- Remember that longer doesn’t necessarily mean better. When presenting your nomination, keep your explanations clear and to the point. Nominations are judged based on what is written and not how many nominations are submitted. Consider coming together with your colleagues to write one nomination explaining how the nominee relates to the questions above. The goal is quality, not quantity.
- Keep to a word limit of about half a page of an A4 document.
- Why not have a look at previous shortlisted finalists for inspiration?
