Below are a list of courses relevant to major trauma that are run in Sussex.
ATLS – Advanced Trauma Life Support – provider course
This course is suitable for doctors F2 and above, and eligible ACPs (Advanced Care Practitioners) involved in trauma care. Nurses and other suitable paramedical services can sometimes attend as observers. Course are run at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Eastbourne, Conquest Hospital, St. Richard’s Hospital.
ATNC – Advanced Trauma Nursing Course – provider course
This course is suitable for Registered Nurses working in trauma teams. However, to meet the educational needs of a changing workforce in trauma teams it is possible for health care professional from other groups (e.g. Paramedics and Operating Department Practitioners) to complete ATNC. APLS – Advanced Paediatric Life Support – provider course
APLS covers both medical and traumatic emergencies in children. It is open to doctors and nurses. This course is run at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
ETC – European Trauma Course
The European Trauma Course runs over 2.5 days and is predominantly practical based learning. It is suitable for doctors, nurses and Advanced Care Practitioners. Medical candidates need to be ST5 and above and ACP/nursing candidates band 6 and above with a regular involvement with trauma calls.
The next ETC in Sussex is due to be held at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in November 2024, but all places are booked at present. Subsequent courses are planned for:
- 26-28th March 2025
- 18-20th June 2025
- 26-28th November 2025

TTL – Trauma Team Leader course
The course was developed by the Sussex Trauma Network to train doctors and nursing staff in leading trauma teams in response to a wide range of emergencies. The course runs twice a year at The Royal Sussex County Hospital and covers skills training at the beginning, followed by a series of relevant scenarios.
TILS – Trauma Intermediate Life Support course
TILS is a one-day course developed to meet Level 1 needs of emergency department nurses working in trauma care. It is run at several sites in the UK. It provides Level 1 emergency department trauma nursing competencies. TILS courses are run at RSCH – Brighton, St Richard’s Hospital – Chichester, Conquest and Eastbourne Hospitals. At present it is not designed to meet the Level 1 competencies for nurses working on adult trauma wards.
TNCC – Trauma Nursing Core Course
TNCC is a two-day course for nurses involved in trauma care. It is run by the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) of the USA and in the UK, courses are provided by Trauma Nursing Limited, a not-for-profit company established to promote and provide quality education for trauma nurses across the UK and Eire. It provides Level 2 trauma nursing competencies.
No courses have been run recently since the start of the COVID-10 pandemic. The course manual and content has recently been updated. There are plans to run it again in Brighton.
