Clinicians across Sussex are launching a new innovative training programme aimed at improving care and outcomes for babies born prematurely.
Rachael Garrett, Programme Manager for Maternity and Neonatal Safety Improvement Programme explains:
“The new training, which will be officially launched later this year, is held in a simulation suite and delivered through realistic scenarios, sees perinatal teams including midwives, nurses, and obstetricians working together in different scenarios to achieve the best possible outcomes.”
“Each scenario is designed to equip colleagues with the skills and confidence to deliver evidence-based care in high-pressure environments such as obstetric theatres or delivery rooms. It also promotes teamwork, consistency, and inclusivity, using diverse mannequins and addressing disparities in outcomes for marginalised communities.”
Two pilot sessions were held at Royal Sussex County Hospital’s simulation suite earlier this year to refine the training programme and shape the most effective, impactful learning experiences for perinatal staff.
Rachel adds: “This training is a game-changer in how we prepare teams for the complexities of preterm birth. It’s not just about clinical skills, it’s about communication, confidence, and compassion. We’re already seeing real improvements in how teams work together to support babies and their families from the very first moments of life.”
The sessions focus on two main areas: implementing optimal cord management and highlighting the emphasis on creating a psychologically safe environment for both patients and colleagues.
Tricia Rigby, Head of Clinical Education and Practice Development for Nursing and Midwife said: “I am so excited that UHSussex is part of this wonderful project which supports clinicians to work within a psychologically safe environment, ensuring everyone has a voice and human factors is encompassed, working with maternal and neonatal voice partners and patient feedback for co-production and design.”
Simulation training offers a wide range of benefits, allowing staff to practice their skills in a safe environment. UHSussex boasts simulation suites at each of its main hospital sites, including St Richard’s, Worthing, Princess Royal, and Royal Sussex County.
