Qualifications: MB BS, BSc (Hons) Physiology, MRCP (UK), CCT in Cardiology
Dr McCready has been a Consultant Cardiologist at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust since 2010. Dr McCready studied medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Medical School, London, and completed specialist training in cardiology, including a senior clinical fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology at The Heart Hospital, University College London Hospitals.
Dr McCready’s clinical and research focus is the treatment of heart rhythm disorders using catheter ablation and implanted cardiac devices. Having performed more than 11,000 electrophysiology and device procedures, Dr McCready has led one of the highest-volume complex ablation programmes in the UK and leads research into why atrial fibrillation can return after cryoballoon ablation.
Clinical interests
Dr McCready’s specialist interests include catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation (using cryoballoon, radiofrequency and pulsed field techniques), ablation for ventricular tachycardia, the removal of pacemaker and defibrillator leads (lead extraction), and the implantation and follow-up of pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) and cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) devices. Dr McCready also sees patients with blackouts (syncope), inherited heart rhythm conditions, and people who have survived a cardiac arrest.
Alongside this specialist work, Dr McCready continues to practise general and acute cardiology: running outpatient clinics, leading ward rounds on the cardiac care unit and caring for patients admitted with heart attacks, heart failure and other urgent heart conditions.
Research
Dr McCready is Chief Investigator of the CHILLY-AF study and has been the Sussex Principal Investigator for national multicentre trials including CASA-AF, AVATAR-AF and RECIRCUIT, with work published in journals including Heart Rhythm, Europace and JACC: Clinical Electrophysiology.
Teaching
Dr McCready is a lecturer and examiner for undergraduate medical and MSc cardiology students at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, trains cardiology registrars at the Trust, and teaches advanced ablation techniques to cardiologists in the UK and internationally.
