Biography
Dr Kamal Patel works full time as a Consultant Paediatrician at The Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton. He was the Clinical Lead for Level 2 Paediatric Critical Care from 2002 to 2020 where he developed the unit’s expertise in paediatric acute Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) leading to 2 national innovation and safety awards in 2016 and the KSS leadership award in quality and safety in 2017. He hosted the UK’s first ESPNIC Acute Paediatric NIV Course in 2015 and is the UK’s first (and only) ESPNIC accredited Acute Paediatric NIV instructor outside of PICU.
Kamal has always been an enthusiast for holistic care, which has led him to develop expertise in several complementary and alternative medicine approaches, paediatric CFS/ME (having run the only specialist clinic in KSS 2004 to 2011) and end of life care in non-oncology cases. Kamal’s interests and research areas are very varied within paediatrics, including art and music in healthcare, safeguarding, CFS/ME, NIV.
Kamal is a leading Child Healthcare educationalist, having set up with Prof Mukhopadhyay in 2016 the Masters programme in Child Health & Paediatrics at Brighton & Sussex Medical School PGMC, for which he is the Course Lead.
