Biography
Dr Nick Pegge has more than 18 years’ experience as a full time, substantive NHS consultant cardiologist working in world renown university teaching hospitals and large district general hospitals. He is responsible for the emergency and elective in-patient and out-patient care of adult patients with all forms of cardiovascular disease, and all areas of associated general internal medicine. Nick has been a leader in change, introducing new procedures and protocols.
Nick is an independent operator and trainer in invasive cardiology including cardiac catheterisation; percutaneous coronary intervention, performing and supervising angioplasty procedures including primary angioplasty for myocardial infarction, and was a founder member of Sussex Primary Angioplasty rota. Nick has a track record of successfully and safely teaching many higher specialist trainees the full range of catheter lab craft skills including left and right heart catheterisation and angioplasty from both radial and femoral approaches.
As an independent operator implanting or supervising pacemaker and complex ICD and CRT device procedures, Nick started the complex device implantation programme at Worthing Hospital and has an established track record of successfully and safely teaching many higher specialist trainees in cardiology to implant pacemakers and complex cardiac rhythm management devices.
Previously lead clinician in Cardiology at Worthing Hospital 2007 to 2009 and 2013 to 2014 for Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, including budget, personnel, clinical audit and governance, research, training for junior doctors and service development. Nick has more than 15 years’ experience making collegiate funding decisions for healthcare via PIN and IFR panels for West Sussex, and has contributed to NICE (MIB). Nick remains the Senior Appraiser in the Division of Medicine, with oversight of appraisal for multiple consultants.
Within medical education and training, Nick is training programme director for higher specialist training in cardiology, Kent, Surrey and Sussex, managing career progression of 60 plus higher specialist trainees such as mentorship, appraisal, pastoral care, rotation planning, competitive selection for advanced modular training. Nick contributes to UK SAC in Cardiology.
As an experienced and accredited expert witness, with Cardiff University Bond Solon certification, Nick has a track record of successful cases over 15 years, including high profile appearances as Expert Witness at GMC hearings. Experienced under cross examination, preparing detailed and authoritative written expert reports for regulatory purposes and commercial counsel, agreeing joint statements with other experts.
