About us
We care for children and young people on our 25 bed ward having surgery or treatment who can go home the same day.
Our friendly team, work with parents and carers to give you quick, efficient and safe care.
Surgery
Different types of surgery are carried out in our ward, from general surgery and dental to ear, nose and throat and ophthalmology (eye conditions). Our medical procedures include IV antibiotics to changing of wound dressings.
Our surgical and medical doctors, nurses and health care assistants in our team, who are supported by paediatric and clinical nurse specialists. Our community nursing team will help you with any ongoing care you need once you are at home. Play specialists also visit the ward to keep your children happy and comfortable when they are having treatment.
About your visit
We care about your safety whilst you are with us. Staff can only enter the ward via a swipe card, whilst your parents can buzz reception to be let in.
The ward has single bedrooms and spacious four-bed bays, all with their own child friendly bathrooms. There is plenty of room in the bays for you to play and your parents to relax.
Our child friendly bedrooms have non-opening low-level windows for you to look out of when they’re lying in bed. Each bed has a telephone and mini-TV.
We have a playroom with toys and games, as well as a teenagers room with mini-snooker and TV. Parents have a shared sitting room with vending machine, and a kitchen on the ward.
Children start to arrive from 7.30 am, and will have medical checks lasting about half an hour before their treatment starts. You can start to go home from around midday.
Our younger children can choose to ride to surgery on a toy quad bike or in a Princess car. Our nurses use a “Monkey Book” with photographs of the ward’s toy monkey to explain what will happen during your visit.
