A specialist cardiac CT team at University Hospitals Sussex has been recognised nationally for delivering high-quality heart scans that support faster, more accurate diagnosis and treatment for patients.
Based at Worthing and Southlands hospitals, the cardiac CT service performs around 120 scans each month, helping clinicians detect, assess and manage heart-related diseases. The quality of these images is crucial, as clearer scans enable clinicians to make more confident diagnoses and support more personalised care for patients.
The team achieved an image quality rate of 97%, among the highest of organisations across the country, earning an award that recognises excellence in cardiac CT imaging.
Jack Vernon, CT Superintendent Radiographer, said: “It’s a real achievement to have received this award, not only for our team but for our patients too. It reflects the dedication of our multidisciplinary team and our commitment to delivering excellent care.
“Being able to produce clear, high-quality scans, we can identify heart conditions more accurately, help patients get the right treatment sooner, and reduce invasive procedures where possible.”
The achievement reflects the expertise and collaboration of colleagues across the cardiac CT service, including radiographers, radiologists, cardiologists, support staff and wider clinical teams.
The team received the award from HeartFlow, a healthcare technology company that uses AI-powered heart modelling to help clinicians assess and manage cardiac conditions.
Benedict Cole, Lead Cardiac CT Radiographer at University Hospitals Sussex, said: “Achieving a high image quality acceptance rate is a fantastic achievement and reflects the commitment, expertise and attention to detail of everyone in our cardiac CT team.
“This award is a testament to the hard work, skill and dedication of the entire team. It reflects the care we take in preparing patients, optimising scan protocols and continually improving the service we provide.”
The recognition reinforces University Hospitals Sussex’s commitment to delivering high-quality, specialist care for patients across Sussex, in line with the ambitions of the Trust’s Excellent Care Everywhere strategy, which focuses on improving outcomes through specialist expertise, innovation and continuous improvement.
