‘Human Factors in Healthcare’ is a course designed to improve patient safety by addressing the human elements that contribute to errors in healthcare settings.
Written by Prof. Rob Galloway, a Consultant in Emergency Medicine. The course, which runs from September 2024 to July 2025 across different locations in Sussex, covers a range of topics including the principles of human factors, cognitive biases, and practical tools to enhance individual and team performance. Attendees will learn how to recognise and mitigate errors, ultimately aiming to improve and innovate clinical systems to better support healthcare professionals and overall enhance patient care.
Prof. Rob Galloway said: “The importance of understanding human behaviour and cognitive biases in preventing errors is highly significant for improvement, we want to ensure patients always receive safe, effective, high-quality care. By understanding why human errors occur, we can create innovative systems that support healthcare staff and reduce the likelihood of mistakes.”
The course is open to anyone interested in the subject, both clinical and non-clinical, and will be held at various locations including Chichester, Worthing, Haywards Heath, and Brighton.
Feedback from previous participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting the course’s impact on their confidence, communication skills, and situational awareness. One participant noted: “This course has completely changed my clinical practice. It’s engaging, dynamic, and incredibly memorable.”
