Jazz Tatem-Harrison, a senior nurse education fellow, has been named Star of the Month for her exceptional actions, caring for a young person in a road accident.
Karen Hartley, Head of Medical Education & Quality, who nominated Jazz, said:
“On her way to work, Jazz witnessed a child being knocked off their bike by a car. With traffic building and tensions rising, she acted quickly to protect the scene, positioning her car to shield the injured cyclist. She calmly coordinated bystanders, ensured emergency services were contacted, and supported both the distressed young person and the driver.
“With expertise in emergency nursing, Jazz assessed the patient, offered reassurance, and even kept the young person warm during heavy rain by sheltering them with her own coat.
“She contacted the young person’s mother, determined it was safe for them to be transported by car, and stayed until the parent arrived, providing accurate information and later a witness statement to the police.
“Jazz has no idea how brilliantly she managed the situation, and what an asset she is to UHSussex.”
In recognition of her dedicated efforts, Jazz received a certificate, prize, and a letter from Interim Chief Executive Dr Andy Heeps. She is also in the running for the Star of the Year Award at the Trust’s annual recognition ceremony in 2026.

Reflecting on her award, Jazz said: “I was very shocked to receive the award, I felt like I did what any human, let alone nurse, would do – help someone in a vulnerable position.”
“I really appreciate it, and it was a lovely surprise to receive on a grey Wednesday!”
After this extraordinary act of care, Jazz continued her day by delivering wellbeing support to resident doctors, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to the community and colleagues alike.
The Star of the Month award recognises the commitment and dedication of staff members who give a service that is over and above what is expected of them in order to make a difference to patients, visitors and/or their colleagues.
They embody the very best of UHSussex values of compassion, respect and inclusivity.
