Who are the Critical Care Outreach Team?

The Critical Care Outreach Team (CCOT) are a team of experienced senior nurses who are specially trained to provide support to patients outside the Intensive Care Unit.  

The CCOT are based in the hospital and can be contacted by the medical and nursing teams looking after you 24 hours a day. We help ward nurses and doctors to care for patients who are, or are at risk of being, very unwell in hospital.

Why has the CCOT come to see me?

We have been asked to see you today because the team caring for you feel that it would help you to have extra support or an assessment from the CCOT.  

The CCOT work closely with your nurses and doctors and the intensive care doctors to make sure you are given the best possible care.

What happens if the CCOT become involved in my care?

The CCOT will:  

• work out what you need and, with your doctors and nurses, make a plan to support you 
• organise or recommend any further monitoring, investigations (like tests or scans), or treatments you may need 
• work out if you need to be cared for in the Intensive Care Unit if you need more support, or if you can stay on the ward that you are already on. 

Going to the Intensive Care Unit is not always required or the right choice for everyone, and we will always talk about this with you, your family, and your doctors first.
