A cancer diagnosis can affect many areas of your life, including your finances. You may be worried about changes to your income, extra costs, or how to manage day-to-day expenses during treatment and recovery.
At University Hospitals Sussex, we understand these concerns. On this page, you’ll find information to help you understand what financial support is available, including benefits, help with living costs, and ways to manage your finances if you are affected by cancer.
For more personalised guidance, you can also speak to your Cancer Support Worker, who can help you access the right support for your situation.
What financial help can I get?
If cancer is affecting your ability to work or your income, you may be able to get financial support.
This could include:
- Benefits to help replace lost income
- Support with extra costs related to your condition or treatment
- Help with household bills, such as energy costs or council tax
Even if you have never claimed benefits before, you may still be entitled to support.
Benefits and what you can claim
There are a range of benefits available, depending on your circumstances. These may include:
- Attendance Allowance
- Pension Credit
- Universal Credit (UC)
- Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP) (England, Wales, or Northern Ireland)
- Adult Disability Payment (Scotland)
Each benefit has its own eligibility criteria, and you may be able to claim more than one.
If you are over State Pension age, you may still be able to get disability-related financial support if cancer affects your daily life or independence.
For further information and support, please contact your Cancer Support Worker, who can refer you to one of our Financial Wellbeing partner specialists.
