Function first

Function First is a rehabilitation-based service for children and young people who have complex and persistent symptoms, or symptoms that are above and beyond what would usually be expected with their diagnosis. For example, we see young people who suffer with chronic pain, dizziness, or functional neurological disorders (FND) such as functional seizures.

Please note the Function First Service is currently commissioned for children and young people up to the age of 18 living in Brighton & Hove only.

How we help

The service helps children and young people recover and/or live well with their symptoms. This may include helping them to understand and manage their symptoms using psychoeducation, therapy interventions and other strategies. Therapeutic support is tailored to the needs of the individual and their family.

The team includes physiotherapists, psychologists, occupational therapists, and a consultant paediatrician. You will meet with at least two of these people at your first appointment.

Getting ready for your appointment

Before your appointment you’ll be sent:

a service information leaflet
some questionnaires and forms

You’ll need to bring the completed forms to your first appointment.

In your first appointment we’ll meet you and your family to find out more about your symptoms and how they affect you. We may ask you questions about how long you have had the symptoms, how they affect you at home, at school and how they affect your family.

You may also be asked about any other health issues you have and any medication you’re taking. Please remember to bring or wear comfortable clothing as we will usually need to do a physical assessment.

We’ll ask you about your hobbies and interests, your hopes for the future and what goals you’d like us to help you with. You’ll also have a chance to ask any questions or raise any worries you may have. Our aim is to get you back to doing more of the things you enjoy!
