How we help
Our team diagnose and care for children with allergies, asthma and a wide range of other childhood respiratory conditions. For children with chronic respiratory conditions they help them to manage this in the long-term.
Children with respiratory problems may be admitted and cared for on the children’s wards by our team. We also provide medical care to other young patients on our wards who may have asthma, allergies or respiratory problems.
For children we see as outpatients we have regular clinics and provide specialist services and procedures.
Allergy clinics
Our one-stop allergy clinic is run by a consultant paediatrician, specialist paediatric nurse and specialist paediatric dietitian. You’ll be asked questions about your child’s history and any assessments they have had. If your child needs it then skin prick allergy testing will be offered and food challenges can be arranged. Guidance on anaphylaxis management and advice on food avoidance may also be discussed.
Asthma clinics
The Asthma clinic helps diagnose children with asthma and provides support for the ongoing management of the condition. It includes lung function testing and more complex lung function testing and exercise challenges can also be arranged. Clinics are run by consultant respiratory paediatricians or specialist paediatric respiratory nurses.
Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia service
We provide care from paediatric consultants, nurses, speech therapists and dietitians to treat infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia which is an oxygen dependent chronic lung disease.
Non-invasive ventilation
We can provide care and support for children who need respiratory support at home.
Bronchoscopy service
Sometimes a procedure called a bronchoscopy is needed to look at your child’s airways and lungs. We can receive referrals for these tests and perform them at The Alex in Brighton.
Private patients
We also offer a private respiratory and allergy service.
Where we are
Respiratory care is based on Level 4 of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital (The Alex) in Brighton.
