The Sussex Motor Neurone Disease Care and Research Network was established in 2016 with funding from the Motor Neurone Disease Association. The primary goal of the Network is to improve support and care for people with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) living in Sussex.
Meet the team
Dr Andrew Barritt was trained at Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ School of Medicine. He first undertook research into corticospinal tract injury with Professor Elizabeth Bradbury during an intercalated Neuroscience BSc in 2004 and graduated with his primary medical degree in 2007. Higher specialist training in Neurology was completed at Hurstwood Park Neurological Centre within Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Queen Square. He graduated from the University of Brighton in 2020 having completed his PhD with Professor Nigel Leigh investigating how detailed magnetic resonance neuroimaging techniques might shed light on the mechanisms of neurodegeneration in MND.
He was appointed as a Consultant Neurologist in 2020, is co-director of the Sussex MND Care & Research Network and continues his imaging research in ALS/MND within Brighton and Sussex Medical School.
Dr Jeban Ganesalingam has been a Consultant Neurologist since 2015. During his training, he undertook a PhD focussing on Biomarkers in ALS at Kings College Hospital. He is currently the co-lead for Neurology Regional Research delivery across Kent, Surrey and Sussex. Dr Ganesalingam also has an interest in developing clinical services and is currently the Neurology lead for the Operational Delivery Network for SE England. Locally, he also has interests in headache.
Rachel Thomson has been Coordinator of the MND Network since it was established in 2016. Rachel works with all our partners and stakeholders on delivery of the Network objectives, alongside her role in coordinating patient care through the MND clinic. Rachel has many prior years’ experience of working with people with MND as an NHS Speech and Language Therapist.
Dan joined the MND team in January 2026 in this new full-time role which is funded by the MND Association.
Dan’s role is to increase people’s participation in research by sharing information about available studies more widely. We also aim to increase the number of studies we have open to recruitment. Dan has been working in neurology research since 2011 and has always enjoyed supporting people with MND through the research experience.
