The NHS Leadership Academy divides the HEART of leadership into the following principles:
- We are inclusive, promote equality and diversity and challenge discrimination
- We are kind and treat people with compassion, courtesy and respect
Quick tips
- Recruitment processes: when interviewing candidates, consider providing a written justification for any candidates not selected for the role, offering a strengths-based view and areas for improvement or development. This will provide clear guidance and goals for the non-selected candidate(s) to work on.
- Stretching: Stretch assignments allow employees to learn more about particular roles they may be interested in, and can be opportunities for further development, without leaving their current positions.
- Training: Consider offering interview preparation training as part of education days.
- Therapeutic use of self: If safe to do so, and where appropriate, consider sharing your experiences or challenges. Vulnerability can be a powerful tool, helping to normalise others’ experiences and creating a safe space to facilitate culture change.
