The NHS Leadership Academy divides the HEAD of leadership into the following principles:
- We aim for the highest standards and seek to continually improve harnessing our ingenuity
- We can be trusted to do what we promise.
Quick tips
- Training: What skills or interests do members of your team have? Could you offer them a time slot on a development day or at a team meeting to share their knowledge?
- CPD: Many staff will have a professional expectation to continue their professional development (CPD). Even if you don’t have a professional registration with this requirement, reflecting on what skills you would like to improve or opportunities you would like to engage in can help your longer-term personal and professional development;
- Communication: Consider how you communicate when things go well, versus when things don’t go well – it can be easy to notice when things go wrong, but do you celebrate when things go right? How do you thank people? How do you offer feedback? How do you apologise when you make a mistake?
