Our teams

Each unit has a dedicated maternity team who work together every day to ensure the best outcomes for families.

All our maternity colleagues also have the opportunity to develop their careers by rotating across our units, including by gaining experience in their jobs with our midwife led units and our special care baby units.

Leadership and safety in maternity at UHSussex

Dr Maggie Davies

As the Chief Nurse for UHSussex, Maggie is the executive lead for midwifery and board lead for safety in maternity. Maggie says: “Our maternity teams never cease to amaze me with their dedication to the highest standards of patient care and commitment to improvement. The pandemic created a unique set of challenges for our midwives, who prioritise individual care for women and birthing people. The way you have risen to those challenges has been truly remarkable.”

Lucy Bloem

Lucy Bloem is the Maternity Non-Executive Director Safety Champion and her role is to support the Board Safety Champion, our Chief Nurse Maggie Davies bringing independent and supportive challenge. Lucy said “At UHSussex, we are absolutely committed to providing the safest, highest quality care for families across Sussex and seek to listen to and learn from the views and experiences of patients and staff. I am very much looking forward to getting to know all our maternity teams”.

Emma Chambers

As the Director of Midwifery for UHSussex, Emma is responsible for representing maternity services to the Trust board and driving improvements. Emma says: “ The Director of Midwifery post is a new one for UHSussex and really demonstrates the Trust’s commitment to improving maternity services for families across Sussex. I have been so impressed with the teams since I have arrived. I’ve been given a really warm welcome and am really enjoying the role.”

Amanda Clifton

Amanda Clifton is the Head of Midwifery for the Royal Sussex County and Princess Royal Hospitals. Amanda says: “In Brighton in particular, we have a very diverse population with very varied needs. I’m really proud of the way we work to meet those needs, providing an inclusive, individualised service for women and birthing people in Brighton, Haywards Heath and beyond.

Gail Addison

Head of Midwifery for Worthing and St Richard’s Hospitals. Gail says: “At Worthing and St Richard’s we have a reputation for maternity excellence and this is a reputation we’re determined to maintain. We want all the women and birthing people who use our service to feel safe and well cared for.”
